We go behind the scenes of NCIS: Los Angeles to give you a sneak peek of the episode in which the real-life moms of several cast members actually guest-star alongside their famous kids!

The show’s creator Shane Brennan said the idea for the unique episode came to him when he met some of the parents on the set. After that, he said writers were tasked with creating “the perfect script and perfect episode” to bring all the moms together for the episode.

Appearing onscreen are the real-life moms of Chris O’Donnell, LL Cool J, Daniela Ruah and Eric Christian Olsen. “I thought it was a joke,” explains O’Donnell about first hearing the idea. “Mom was excited when I called her up and told her the news, and said, ‘I’m coming, I’ll be there.'”

Watch the videos above to hear the moms reveal when they knew their children were going to be stars.

Without question, the Oct. 9 episode of NCIS: L.A. is the mother of all mysteries.
While the team tracks down a suspect in a casino, four women – portrayed by the lead actors’ real-life mothers – are playing poker.

When executive producer Shane Brennan e-mailed the CBS drama’s stars with the idea, “I thought it was a joke,” Chris O’Donnell says. “When I found out he was serious, I was excited to call my mom. I knew this would be the biggest deal for her.”

It was a thrill for the actors as well. “It was fun getting to work and seeing her in hair and makeup,” Eric Christian Olsen says of having his mother, Jeanne, on-set.
The producers made sure the women were welcomed in style, giving them deluxe motor coaches that surrounded a makeshift Astroturf courtyard with potted plants and patio furniture.

“It was like Yankee Stadium!” says LL Cool J.
The scene took only a couple of hours to film, but the actors say the memories will last a lifetime.

“Acting with your mom? It’s not something you get to do very often,” Daniela Ruah says.

But if O’Donnell’s mom, Julie, has her way, it will happen again soon. “She thinks this is her big break,” O’Donnell says, laughing. “If ‘Mom 2’ appears in another script I’m sure she’ll answer the call.”

And so will Ondrea Smith, LL Cool J’s mother, who admits, “I could get used to this!”

NCIS: LA’s Kensi Blye (Daniela Ruah) will soon be kicking ass a little west of Los Angeles when she heads to Hawaii Five-0 in an upcoming episode of the show’s second season. But what takes her all the way to the sandy shores of Hawaii? In real life, it didn’t take much, NCIS: LA executive producer Shane Brennan tells EW.

“Interestingly, Daniela has never been to Hawaii, so it took no convincing,” he jokes. He declined to give too many details of the case that finds Kensi working with the team on Five-0. But he did share this:

“It’s an appearance on that show that’s important and has impact.” And while Kensi’s business trip to Hawaii is “not a big appearance,” Brennan added that NCIS: LA fans will want to tune in because there will be some references to it in the future.

And fans waiting for a little more inter-franchise crossover action will be happy to hear that even though there are “no current plans” for another NCIS crossover, Brennan is open to it. “There are possibilities,” he says. “The Hawaii Five-0 opportunity popped up and we said, ‘That’s great; let’s do it.’ Those things happen without a lot of planning. It’s not anything you plan and set before. It’s something that pops up in the writing…It has to be organic or else it feels bolted on. It has to be a natural extension of the story that’s going on. For Hawaii Five-0, that’s exactly what it is.”

But he does admit to having one reservation about lending a member of his team. “I’m a bit concerned they might not give her back,” he says with a laugh.
