Healthy habits keep this CBS star’s energy -and spirits— high.

To say that the NCIS: Los Angeles cast and crew are a close-knit bunch is an understatement, particularly in the case of Daniela Ruah, the striking 30-year-old actress who plays Special Agent Kensi Blye. In fact, Ruah, a native of Boston, recently gave birth to a boy with fiancé David Paul Olsen, the elder brother (and stunt double) of co-star Eric Christian Olsen. During her pregnancy, the new mom stayed active, which likely made things a lot easier in the delivery room. Ruah cites her Portuguese parents as her healthy role models, and no doubt she’ll become one for her young son, too, given her propensity for cardio and nutritious meals. Here’s how (and why) she believes in keeping her health a priority.

Mix It Up

“As a kid, I was very active. I started with ballet, then alternated between dance and rhythmic gymnastics. In school I was on the track and field team as a jumper and sprinter. Now, going to the gym works best for my schedule. I work out by myself as well as with a personal trainer. I also love jogging outdoors with my dogs.”

Join the Band

“I like TRX and resistance bands. You can easily use them at the gym or at home, and there are a variety of exercises you can try for a full-body workout.”

Be Conscientious

“Sometimes you need to force yourself to be active, even if it just means taking a brisk walk around the block to get the blood flowing. However, listening to your body is important, too, and sometimes all I need is a little rest.”

Keep a “Clean” House

“Good eating habits start at home. Fortunately, my parents were always conscientious about healthy eating, so we never had soda or candy in the house. I always remember my mom serving balanced meals: proteins, carbs and healthy fats. I definitely carried that into adulthood. In this day and age, I opt for the organic or non-GMO options available—but I won’t beat myself up for having a doughnut once in a while!”

Say Soy

“Edamame, or soybeans, is my favorite snack! I like them one of two ways: sautéed with a little spicy sesame oil, or simply steamed with a little sea salt.”
